Sanctuary entrance arch · El RosarioIf you want the best-reviewed day, take the Sierra Chincua tour. If price matters most, the Piedra Herrada trip costs $91 and adds Valle de Bravo, but makes for the longest day at 15.5 hours. For your own pace, choose one of the two private cars, and if you have a week, the small-group tour visits several sanctuaries.
Day tours from Mexico City cost $91–292 per person, or $446–787 for a private car. The price gap mostly buys you a shorter or more comfortable day: hotel pickup, a private vehicle, entry tickets included. Lunch is not included on any of the four, and horses are paid in cash on the spot.

Tours to Michoacán (Sierra Chincua, El Rosario) drive about 3.5 hours each way; the Valle de Bravo side is closer, at about 2 hours. Either way you leave between 6:00 and 8:00, spend one to two hours on the trail and with the colony, and are back in the city in the early evening — later on the Piedra Herrada trip, which adds the lake town.
Tours from Mexico City go to three sanctuaries. Sierra Chincua has the best-reviewed shared tour, El Rosario had last season’s largest colony and is reached on a private tour, and Piedra Herrada near Valle de Bravo is the shortest drive and the cheapest day out. Tap a sanctuary to compare the road, the walk and the tour.
About 3.5 hours each way into Michoacán, then a strenuous walk of about 3 km at around 3,000 m, with horses for hire. The day tour picks you up at your hotel between 6:00 and 8:00 and plans about five hours at the sanctuary.
guide pointing over forested hillsAbout 3.5 hours each way to Ocampo, Michoacán, then a 2 km uphill walk of 30–60 minutes, or a horse for about 200 MXN each way. The private tour takes up to three people, leaves at 7:00 and includes entry, tolls and parking.
sanctuary entrance arch, El RosarioAbout 2 hours by van into the State of Mexico, a walk of about 40 minutes with horses optional, then a waterfall and free time in Valle de Bravo. Entry, about US$13, is paid on site; the 2026–27 opening was not confirmed in November 2026.
oyamel crowns full of butterfliesTwo private tours run from Mexico City. The El Rosario tour takes up to three people to the largest colony for one group price, with entry tickets, tolls and parking included. The Valle de Bravo private tour is priced per person, lets you start any time between 7:00 and 12:00 and combines the sanctuary with the lake town.
Going on your own is possible by rental car or by bus to Zitácuaro and a taxi, and it is cheaper on paper. But there is no direct bus to the Michoacán sanctuaries, return taxis aren't guaranteed, and the US rates Michoacán Level 4. For most first-time visitors a tour is the simpler and safer choice.

The four day tours from Mexico City have 75 verified reviews between them. Guests rave about the guides and the colonies, and warn about the very early start, the long drive and a physical walk at altitude.
“What an experience! It is a long day, I was picked up at my Airbnb at 6 am and dropped off at 7 pm. Well worth it. I went mid February and there were thousands of butterflies fluttering around.”
“Amazing day at the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary! Michelle was an awesome guide! She was knowledgeable, professional, and kind. Transportation was comfortable and smooth and Manuel was an outstanding driver! I highly recommend this tour!”
“Humberto was a great guide, very kind to me when I was very slow climbing the mountain in the butterfly sanctuary. Incredible sight to see the monarch butterflies! Well worth the trip and effort!”
“I highly recommend this activity! It was a pleasure to get to know our guide, Carlos, on the way there and back. He pointed out interesting things along the way and happily answered all of our questions. This activity is very physical even if you elect to ride the horses up and down the mountain.”
“Gustavo was an excellent guide. We hiked 2 miles up a mountain to see the Monarch butterflies. His driving and conversation throughout the whole trip was very enjoyable.”
“Long drive to and from CDMX due to constant traffic, but an excellent day trip for nature lovers. Carlos, our guide and driver, was knowledgeable, courteous, patient, and very accommodating. Highly recommend both the trip and Carlos.”
